Spring funding round-up

Spring 2013 is full of deadlines for various plant science funding opportunities. I compiled a list of calls that close in the next few months here. For up-to-date funding news, check the UKPSF website.

Research funding, partnering awards, and fellowships

BBSRC Strategic Longer and Larger Grants: Outline proposal deadline 18 April. Selected applicants will then be invited to submit full applications by January 2014. These sLoLa grants are worth over £2M and can last up to 5 years. The proposed projects must be in line with BBSRC Strategic Priorities, and in this round proposals are particularly encouraged in ‘innovative routes to fine and platform chemicals’ and ‘mechanisms for enhancing cellular productivity.’

BBSRC Responsive Mode: Deadline 24 April. Proposals are accepted to the four research committees for projects in line with BBSRC Strategic Priorities. Remember that plant scientists may apply to Committees B and D. For non-plant specific generic genes, development, technology, engineering, and maths approaches to biology, consider Committee C.

BBSRC Synthetic Biology China Partnering Award: Deadline 30 April. Up to 5 awards will be co-funded with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). The funds are to form collaborations between UK- and China- based groups who are current BBSRC or CAS grant holders. The four key areas highlighted in the call are fairly well suited to plant science, so if you have Chinese contacts and are open to synthetic biology, do give this partnering award consideration.

BBSRC Enterprise fellowships: Deadline 17 May. This enterprise-driven award provides a salary for a year spent on developing a business plan and seeking investment, access to mentors and business experts, and business training. Academics, research staff, or post-grads may apply.

TSB Feasibility and Collaborative R&D Competition in Measurement Technologies for Agri-food Systems: Deadline 1 May. Up to £500k is available for a number of grants of around £25-100k for feasibility studies. Collaborative R&D grants of up to £2m are also available. Both calls require a business partner.

NERC Doctoral Training Partnerships: Deadline 1 May. A responsive scheme for funding for 10-20 doctoral training partnerships that offer training across a range of subject areas within the NERC remit. There is a handy FAQ document associated with this call.

EUREKA’s Eurostars Programme: Deadline 4 April. This is a fund specifically for near-market innovative products. It is designed for SMEs, but universities may apply as part of a collaboration.

Royal Society-DIFD Africa Capacity Building Initiative: Deadline 4 April. Network grants of up to £25 000 and Programme Grants of up to £1.2m are available for projects relating to water and sanitation, renewable energy, or soil-related research. Applications must be from consortia with members from sub-Saharan Africa and the UK.

Funding for students:

SCI David Miller Travel Bursary Award: Deadline 15 April. Plant science or horticultural students in the UK or Ireland can apply for this £250 grant for overseas travel in connection with their careers.

Biochemical Society Krebs Memorial Scholarship: Deadline 31 March. This PhD scholarship award covers EU-rate fees and maintenance for a PhD student at a UK university. There are no restrictions on nationality.

The Gen Foundation: Deadline 31 March. Any student of any nationality studying natural sciences, language, music, or art, even if they are already supported by other funds, may apply for funding of between £500 and £5000. The Foundation does not support undergraduates, short-term training, conferences, seminars, or thesis writing.

European Science Foundation QuanTissue Exchange Grants: Deadline 31 March. Travel funds are available for an exchange between PhD students or young researchers in different countries. The funds granted depends on the proposed work, which can be ay duration up to 6 months. The work must be related to the QuanTissue Programme, a multi-disciplinary project which aims to understand ‘the basic mechanisms that govern morphogenetic processes at subcellular to tissue levels.’

British Society of Plant Pathology Travel Funds: Deadline 28 February/31 May. Any member of BSPP may apply, but applications are particularly encouraged from students. Funds are available to cover expenses for study visits or conferences.

British Society of Plant Pathology Undergraduate Vacation Bursary Fund and MSc Project Bursary Fund: Deadline 1 April. Supervisors may apply for £200 per week and £500 consumable budget is available for undergraduates working in a research laboratory over the summer for 8-10 weeks, or Master’s students for a maximum of 17 weeks.

The BSPP also have rolling calls for Senior and Junior Fellowships, which fund study away from a scientist’s normal place of work, and a £2000 outreach grant, the Plant Pathology Promotion Fund.
