Here’s your irregular round-up of funding opportunities. Some of these deadlines will already be burned into your brains, but hopefully there a few useful new ones for you to think about!
Many of the options below are only available if you are a member of a society. Funding is one of many benefits to joining a learned society (blog post on this from Sarah Blackford), and if you’re a student your institution might even pay for the membership fee for you.
Travel – conferences
British Mycological Society Small Grants: Deadlines 20 July, 20 September, 20 December, 20 March every year. Not pure plant science, but worth a look if you work on plant-fungi interactions or soil. Grants available for fieldwork, travel to meetings, to buy books or scientific equipment.
The Genetics Society Conference Grants: Deadlines 1 August, 1 November, 1 February, 1 May. Two types of grants are available depending on whether the event is linked to the Genetics Society or not.
The British Society of Plant Pathology Travel Fund: Deadlines 31 August, 30 November, 28/29 February every year. Assistance is available for conferences, study tours and visits – students are particularly encouraged to apply.
Biochemical Society General Travel Grants: Deadlines 1 September, 1 November, 1 January, 1 March, 1 May, 1 June, 1 July every year. Up to £750 is available.
Society of Biology’s Company of Biologists Travel Grants: Deadlines 30 September, 31 December, 31 March, 30 June every year. Up to £500 is available.
Society of Biology Travel Grant – Early Career or Affiliate Member: Deadline 31 October. Five grants of £500 are available per funding round.
Travel – people exchange and fellowships
The Genetics Society Fieldwork Grant: Deadlines 1 August, 1 October, 1 December, 1 February, 1 April, 1 June every year. Up to £1500 per project is available to cover travel and accommodation for a field-based genetic research project. Anyone can apply, but if you’re a student or post-doc you’ll need a supporting letter from your PI.
The Genetics Society Training Grant: Deadlines 1 August, 1 October, 1 December, 1 February, 1 April, 1 June every year. Grants of up to £1000 are available to cover travel, accommodation, subsistence and tuition fees for a short training course.
Company of Biologists Travelling Fellowships: Deadlines 31 August, 31 December, 30 April every year. Fellowships of up to £2,500 are available to graduate students and post-doctoral researchers wishing to make collaborative visits to other laboratories.
Seminars, workshops and collaborative events
Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences visitor programmes: Deadlines 31 July, 31 January every year. Research programmes typically support travel, accommodation, subsistence and resources including the library and computing facilities for around 20 scientists to work collaboratively with a base at the institute for 1, 4 or 6 months. The research must be into mathematical sciences, but examples of mathematical biology projects can be found on the website.
Royal Society International Scientific Seminars: Deadlines 31 July. This is only for Royal Society Research Fellows – but it looks good! Organise a fully funded meeting at the Royal Society’s Chicheley Hall in Buckinghamshire.
EMBO Workshops: Deadlines 1 August, 1 March every year. Up to €30 000 is available for workshop organisation in EMBC Member States (including the UK) or partner countries.
Research and Capital funding
NERC Strategic Environmental Science Capital Call: Deadline 22 August. Eligible Research Organisations are invited to submit proposals for capital assets with a value of between £100,000 and £500,000 per proposal. Proposals should demonstrate how the capital asset would support world class environmental science, aligned with NERC’s remit and strategic priorities, and have potential to stimulate innovation and economic impact.
BBSRC Tools and Resources Development Fund: Deadline 17 September. Proposals are invited for projects of up to £150k (£187k FEC; flexible) that aim to pump prime the next generation of tools, technologies and resources that will be required by the BBSRC-supported bioscience community.
BBSRC responsive mode: Deadlines 24 September, 8 January. UK plant science’s bread-and-butter. Apply to Committee B for plants, food and sustainability research; but don’t forget to consider Committee C for genomics and mathematical approaches and Committee D for molecules, cells and industrial biotechnology. Horizon 2020: Bio Based Industries: Deadline 15 October. Call for proposals from international consortia, focussing on bio-based industries including energy and fuel, chemicals, materials, and food. For more information go to the Bio Based Industries Consortium website.
ERC Advanced Grant: Deadline 21 October. These grants are designed to support excellent, established Principal Investigators with a recognised track record of research achievements.
H2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowships: Deadline 11 September. Individual, trans-national fellowships awarded to the best or most promising researchers for employment in EU Member States or Associated Countries, based on an application made jointly by the researcher and host organisation in the academic or non-academic sectors
